The programme is one of the oldest in the University of Malawi and the main aim is to develop understanding and skills on how public organizations function or can be managed towards goal attainment. Special attention is given to democratization in the Malawian context, and its implications on the managers’ role. In this regard, it is an interdisciplinary programme which deals with cutting edge knowledge in the diverse fields of Management, Development, Administration, Policy Analysis, Marketing, Law and Politics.
Based on this approach student gain multiple skills on how to handle challenges in both the private and public sector institutions. More importantly, the programme encourages practical and relevant problem solving approaches.
This programme provides students with a thorough understanding of fundamental concepts dealing with and related to state and government in general. The programme gives students a detailed description of forms of governments and their working and makes clear distinction between systems of government, which is necessary in the context of emerging democracies.
More importantly the programme familiarizes students with the regional and international politics especially in the context of the continuously and rapidly changing landscape of the international political system which has implications on national development policy prescriptions.
